Abstract
559,318. Metal-vapour lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., and ALDINGTON, J. N. Sept. 30, 1942, No. 13745. [Class 39 (i)] In a metal vapour discharge lamp solid electrodes 1 and 20 are mounted with their axes at any angle less than 180 degrees and their extremities are so shaped as not to intercept the angle over which light from the arc is required to be projected. The surfaces of the electrodes are cut away at 10 and 13 in order to effect this latter condition. A shield 17 of molybdenum is provided to intercept rising currents of metal vapour and, when the electrodes are of tungsten particles rising therefrom tend to alloy themselves with the molybdenum at the temperatures prevailing and are thus removed from circulation. In a numerical example the bulb 1 is 110 mms. in diameter, the anode is a cylinder 17.5 mms. in diameter and 35 mms. long, and the cathode is a block 12 mms. diameter and 20 mms. long. The arc gap is 12 mms. and the shield 17 is 4 mms. thick. Specifications 549,373, [Group XXXVI], and 555,545 are referred to.
