Abstract

626,331. Converting. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30832. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1943. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] The cathode screen of a gas and/or vapourfilled converting valve is connected to a tapping on a potentiometer connected between the cathode and an anode. An argon and mercury vapour-filled glass valve 1 of the kind described in Specification 623,012, [Group XL (a)], has two anodes 3 surrounded by gauze screens 8 and separated by screen 12, and a cathode 2 with a screen comprising a cylinder 13 and a cover 14 for preventing the passage of cathode particles to the anode. So that the anode voltage at initiation of discharge may not vary, the cathode screen, to which the arc is first struck from the cathode, is given a voltage intermediate between those of anode and cathode by connecting it to the junction of resistances 21, 22 connected between anode and cathode. These resistances may be mounted on cooling fin 20 on hood 17 in which mercury 18 is kept substantially at air temperature. The cylindrical part of the screen may be divided into as many mutually insulated parts as there are anodes, and each connected to a tapping on a potentiometer connected between the cathode and the respective anode, Figs. 2a-2c (not shown).
