472,336. Arc converters. ALLGEMEINE ELEKTRICITATS-GES. April 20, 1936, No. 11324. Convention date, April 18, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] In an arc converter which comprises electrodes disposed in a gas stream and means for igniting periodically the main arc by means of auxiliary arcs between a main electrode and a surrounding screen electrode, the insulation between the electrodes is arranged in such manner that separate electrical connection to the two electrodes may be made on the exterior of the converter. A main electrode 1 is mounted in a gas-tight manner through an insulating tube 10 on the cover 8 of the gas chamber 9. The striking and screening electrode 2 is mounted on the base 4 provided with the terminal 5. Cooling devices for the main electrode may also be insulated from the cover which alternatively. may be formed of insulating material. The arc may be rotated by a magnetic field, the flux of which is adapted to pass through the reduced part 12- of the tube 10. The closure members may be subdivided, stiffened or supported in such manner that the electrodes 1, 2 do not move relatively to each other. The tube 10 is extended externally to increase the external spark-over resistance. In another form, connection to the igniting electrode may be effected through cooling pipes therefor.
