[Class 44] [Also in Group X] Relates to a manhole cover 1 of the kind which is freed from the outside by a slidable locking lever 9 with a hooked end 10 engaging the bell-crank latch lever 14, the lever 9 being normally secured by a padlock 11 to a bracket on the cover, and consists in providing means for opening the cover from the inside comprising a plate 22 secured to the downturned free end of the latch lever and engaged by the hand or head to free the latch. On release of the latch a counterweight 26, connected by a lever 25 and link 27 to the cover, raises the latter; a handle 29 may be provided in addition. The cover 1 is preferably hinged at one side in a frame 4 with weep holes 6. The latch lever may have a brass insert 20.
