556,372. Electron lenses. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 1, 1942, No. 9058. Convention date, July 2, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] An electron lens with low spherical aberration comprises a tubular central electrode 26, Fig. 1, and rounded end electrodes 25, 27 shaped as surfaces of revolution with their convex ends facing each other. In the ideal case the surfaces are generated from the product of a hyperbolic and a Bessel function, but a sufficient approximation is given by surfaces built up of one or two spherical sections. As shown in Fig. 6, the tubular electrode may be a cylindrical passage 41 in a thick disc 40 and the rounded surfaces may be projections 45, 46 on end discs 43, 44. An electron microscope using the lens comprises a cathode 15, shield 16, anode 18, object holder 24 of mesh supported in an apertured disc 22, lens 25, 26, 27, and screen 12. Members 18, 22, 25, 27 are conductively connected to an earthed metal envelope 10, which carries at one end a window 11 for the screen 12, at the other end a seal 14 for the cathode and at the side a seal 30 for the lead and support of electrode 26, which may thus be kept, as shown, at cathode potential.
