Abstract
552,404. Two-stroke engines. WYATT, E., and WALL, A. W. Oct. 4, 1941, No. 12829. [Class 7 (ii)] Each engine cylinder 9 is connected at 9a with a charging cylinder 8 provided with a spring-loaded. poppet valve 16 movable axially in relation to a piston 10 by which combustible mixture is compressed in the cylinder 8 and expelled through the valve 16 to the engine cylinder. Fig. 1a shows one cylinder of an engine having four similar radial cylinders. A fan 5 on the engine shaft 6 supplies combustible mixture through a pipe 7 to an inlet port 8a in the charging cylinder 8. The piston 10 slides on the stem 11 of the valve 16 and is connected at its lower end to an extension 12a of the gudgeon 12 of the engine piston 13, which extension passes through slots in the adjacent walls of the cylinders 8, 9. The valve 16 may be actuated by the pressure in the cylinder 8 or by a cam. The cylinder heads are surrounded by an annular casing 18 to which cooling air is admitted at 19 and passes with exhaust from ports 9b to an outlet section 18a as described in Specification 552,411. The Provisional Specification mentions the application of the invention to single-cylinder and to multicylinder V-type and in-line engines.
