[Class 35] [Also in Group XXXIM In aircraft, a mechanism driven directly or indirectly from a rotating shaft, such as pitchvarying or propeller de-icing means or a windmilling screw, is controlled by the braking effect of a stationary toroidal coil electromagnet on an armature carried by the mechanism; alternatively the armature may be stationary and the electromagnet rotate. Fig. 1 shows the magnet 8 acting on an armature 7 loosely rotatable on the propeller shaft and carrying a crown wheel 3 gearing with bevel pinions on the blade roots. Energization of the magnet thus alters the pitch of the blades. By making the armature 25, Fig. 4, solid with the shaft of a windmilling air-screw braking may be effected. In a modification two electromagnets are provided, associated with outer and inner elements of an epicyclic gear which is thus operable in either direction to vary the pitch of the screw blades.
