Abstract

500,334. Electrically-operated brakes. BARBAROU, M. J. B. June 14, 1938, No. 17683. Convention date, July 29, 1937. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] Reaction annuli 8, 22, the braking of which causes the shaft 16 of a supercharger to be driven at either of two overspeeds from the engine shaft 1, are each braked by a pair of opposed electromagnets, one of which moves towards the other to grip an interposed disc part of the annulus when the pair is energized. The electromagnets 13, 21 are fixed in the stationary casing whilst the coacting electromagnets 18, 32 are axially movable along splines 17 therein. The braked discs 12, 26 associated with the respective annuli 8, 22 are of magnetic material with the exception of an annular bronze insert 33 in each disc, which divides the magnetic flux into two zones to increase the grip on the disc. The electromagnets may be controlled by manual switches, or, on an aircraft may be controlled automatically in accordance with the altitude by a manometric capsule and relay
