[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXIV] Gearing for operating the pitch - changing mechanism of a propeller provides two speeds, one greater and one less than that of the driving shaft, by epicyclic gear trains which together with a non-rotatable electromagnetic brake are arranged round the driving shaft, the brake moving axially to co-operate with either of the gear trains. The driving shaft 2 carries a driving sun-wheel 1 meshing with gears 15 planetating inside an annulus 10 secured to an electromagnetic brake-disc 5 which is non- rotatable but maintained normally in a central position by springs 9. Planet gears 13, 14 are rigidly connected by a shaft freely carried in the hub of the gear 15, and engage with annuli 11, 12 rigid with freely mounted armatures 6, 7. The planet-gear 13 meshes with a sun-gear 3 formed on a member freely rotatable about shaft 2 and having teeth 3<1> driving a driven gear 4, which turns toothed wheels secured to the propeller blade-roots. Energization of a coil 8 draws the brake-disc 5 against the springs 9 towards the armature 6, which is thereby braked and allows transmission of drive from the gear 1 to gear 3 through gears 15, 10, 13, 11, the gear 3 being rotated at a speed greater than shaft 2. Energization of a coil 8<1> brakes armature 7, and the gear 3 is driven slower than shaft 2. The planet system 13, 14 is supported by friction rollers 16 bearing on annular friction surfaces on the annuli 11, 12.
