Abstract
557,833. Screw propellers. ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. Sept. 16, 1942, No. 13094. Convention date, Sept. 25. 1941 [Class 114] The pitch of the blades is adjusted under hand control by means of an electromotor and two concentric sleeves 30, 32 having a screw-threaded engagement with each other, and normally rotating together and with the. propeller-shaft. The inner sleeve 32 is held against axial movement, and the outer sleeve is connected to each of the blades by an arm 28 and an eccentric pin 22. The inner sleeve is connected by a flange 36 to the armature 40 of the motor, the housing 66 of which is fixed to the engine. The inner sleeve is normally locked to the propellershaft by a spring-closed clutch including a ring 50, which is splined to the shaft. When the pitch is to be changed, the circuit of the motor is closed by means of a switch 62, which at the same time energizes a solenoid 60 and opens the clutch 50. The sleeve 32 is thereupon driven by the motor under the control of a rheostat 75 at a speed greater or less than that of the outer sleeve 30, which is consequently moved axially and changes the pitch. The two sleeves may be connected by balls located in the screw threads. Either the inner or the outer sleeve may be connected to the blades. The eccentric pin 22 for operating the blade may be replaced by a strap surrounding the root of the blade, or a boss on the periphery of the blade may be connected by a pin and a slot to the arm 28.
