Abstract

578,710. Helicopters. ROTARY RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 17, 1944, No. 9475. Convention date, July 5, 1943. [Class 4] A helicopter rotor blade is provided with a drag vane disposed for extension outside, and retraction within, the contour of the blade, and means for causing cyclic extension and retraction of the vane in time with the revolution of the rotor, the direction of the extension and retraction of the vane being generally normal to the chord of the blade. In the construction shown, the blade is of fixed pitch, the drag vane comprising a member 57 which is periodically projected from the lower surface of the blade 14 by bell-cranks 50 connected by links 45, 42, 43, 36, 38 to a gymbal ring 23 tiltable in any direction by a control member operated by the pilot, the azimuth of maximum drag being governed by the azimuth of the control member displacement and the maximum drag being dependent upon the amount of displacement of the control member. The drag vane may be projected from the upper blade surface, while the blade may be of the controllable pitch type.
