Abstract

544,623. Cooling air and gas compressors. HOLMAN BROS., Ltd., and MILLS, E. C. Dec. 23, 1940, No. 18035. [Class 8 (i)] A compressor 1 is driven by an internal combustion engine 2, 3, and has an associated cooler such as an intercooler 4, through which the compressor air &c. passes : the cooler and the engine and compressor cylinders are cooled by an air current produced by a fan 10 and led through ducting 12, 13, 14 which correctly proportions the cooling air flow. The fan may be secured to the fly-wheel. The ducting embraces the intercooler 4 and engine cylinders 2, 3 ; one of its walls 18 extends beyond these cylinders and is louvred at the point 18a to distribute air to the cylinder 1 and an aftercooler. The compressor may be a two-stage single-cylinder compressor, the air from the first stage passing through an upper conduit 5 to the intercooler 4 and through a lower conduit to the second stage and to the aftercooler and outlet 9. The fan also delivers air to cool a vaned oil cooling sump 23, and through a duct 25 delivers air to supercharge the engine cylinders. The compressor cylinder may be vaned ; alternatively the engine and compressor cylinders may be water-jacketed, the air flow cooling the water. Specification 544,622 is referred to.
