Abstract

546,678. Air-cooled compressors. HOLMAN BROS., Ltd., and MILLS, E. C. March 26, 1941, No. 4070. [Class 8 (i)] A single fan cools the drive, e.g. an electric motor, or belt shaft bearings, and the intercooler or aftercooler of an air-cooled compressor. As shown in Fig. 2, air enters by a filter 16, and is compressed in the upper cylinder end and delivered through piping 14, intercoolers 3a, 3b connected by a passage 13 and piping 15 to the high-pressure end. The fan 4 on the crankshaft draws air over the motor and forces it laterally over the intercoolers and upwards over the cylinder fins ; the fan may also cool the oil sump in the base of the crank casing. The passage 13 is formed in the bottom of the fan housing. In a modification, the cooler 3a comprises flow and return pipes conveying the air to the second stage, and the cooler 3b is an aftercooler also with return flow pipes.
