Abstract
483,644. Compound air compressors. SLADE, L. W., and WESCOMBE, H. C. Oct. 15, 1936, No. 28013. [Class 8 (i)] A two-stage compressor comprises horizontally opposed high and low pressure cylinders 5, 6, an oil sump 7 between them and a water jacket 8 surrounding the cylinders and sump, the cylinders and sump are formed by a single casting ; an intercooler coil 13 is located in the water bath near the inlet 8a for the water. Oil is carried from the sump by a chain 48 passing over the crank-shaft, forced by the rotation along a helical groove on the shaft and through passages 53, 54 to the roller bearings of the connecting-rod big ends. The crank-shaft is carried on roller bearings 57 and carries a flywheel provided with fan spokes 58a which deliver air to cool a radiator for the circulating cooling water. Elastic ring inlet and outlet valves are provided in the cylinder heads. The second-stage cylinder is provided with a valvecontrolled byepass 41 by which at starting the air may be fed back into the crank-case, whence it is passed to the first-stage cylinder inlet. The opening of the byepass 41 into the crankcase is controlled by a ball valve 35 held open at starting by a spring-pressed plunger thimble 32 sliding within an extension of the crank-shaft. The thimble is connected with a slidable part 29 of a cage enclosing balls 26, which when the speed rises force the part 29 and the thimble back allowing the valve 35 to close, so that the second-stage compressor becomes effective.
