543,904. Propelling and stabilizing ships. RONNING, A. Sept. 17, 1940, No. 14292. [Classes 113 (i) and 114] A propelling installation comprising the power unit 11 and the twin propellers 17, is mounted in trunnions in a caisson 24 detachably mounted in a housing 20 secured within the hull. The propellers take into a recess 23 in the keel K. For steering purposes the lower part of the unit 11 may be rotated by operating the steering-motor 47. One of the power units is arranged well forward and another aft. By inclining the caisson in accordance with the pitching of the vessel by means of a mercury switch initiating the movement of hydraulic cylinders 32, 33, this movement of the ship may be quenched. For the purpose of minimising the roll a pair of the propelling units are mounted amidships off the centre line of the vessel. The rolling motion is reduced by swinging the devices in opposite senses in accordance with the angle of roll. In a modification the propeller units are mounted in the housing so as to be incapable of a tilting motion. The position of the propellers is indicated by a meter actuated by a cam on the shaft connecting them power unit with the propellers.
