Abstract

785,900. Hydroplane boats. WENDEL, F. H. Nov. 25, 1955 [Nov. 25, 1954], No. 33863/55. Classes 113 and 114. In a high-speed water craft comprising a hull 1, at least two legs 3 depending therefrom, said legs being side by side, one on the port and the other on the starboard side of the hull, an elongated body 5 carried on the lower end of each leg (In Figs. 1 and 6 there is a central leg 4 at the stern), each such body being elongated in the direction of the length of the hull and shaped to produce a hydrodynamic liftihg force on the hull when the craft is propelled, driving propellers 8 carried by the bodies and operated by a power plant 2 carried by the hull, hydrofoils (6 in Figs. 1, 6, 7 and 8 ; 19 in Fig. 2) extending in a port to starboard direction, each hydrofoil being connected at one end to one of the bodies 5, at least some of the hydrofoils being pivotable about axes 13 which extend in a port to starboard direction, and control means for turning the pivotable hydrofoils about their axes, the arrangement is such that when the craft is propelled the hydrofoils and bodies 5 exert an upthrust on the hull, which upthrust can be varied by turning the pivotable hydrofoils about their axes 13. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 and as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the rear body 5 is pivotally mounted on a vertical shaft 12 in the legs 4 to permit a change of direction of the craft by turning the rear body 5 either way within an angle of 90 degrees.
