Abstract

1390762 Retarding ships GLACIER METAL CO Ltd 5 May 1972 [10 Feb 1971] 4324/71 Heading B7V Braking apparatus for ships and like water borne vessels comprises a water scooping device having one end immersed in the water and another disposed above the water level, so that while the vessel is moving water entering the device in one direction is caused to turn through an angle and leave the device with a velocity having a component in the direction of travel of the ship which is at least equal to the velocity of the ship. The device may take the form of a curved duct 1, Fig. la, built subsubstantially within the vessel hull with a door 4 which may be operated such as by hydraulic rams. Alternatively, an open scoop 6, Fig. 2a, may be used which can be pivoted about hinge 8, as shown, when not required or withdrawn within the hull of the vessel by an operating ram. Two such ducts may be provided on either side of the bows of the vessel which may be turned by operating only one duct of the pair to augment the operation of the rudder. In another embodiment, a drogue is attached to the stern of the vessel through a tow line 20, Fig. 6a, while a float or surface skimmer 21 prevents the drogue from sinking, and a stabilizing keel 22 may be required to draw the drogue down to the correct level.
