Abstract

1,119,152. Reducing drag on water vehicles. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 21 March, 1966 [29 April, 1965 (2)], No. 12283/66. Headings B7A and B7M. The drag on water vehicles (i.e. on the submerged surface of surface vessels, underwater craft or the hydrofoils of hydrofoil craft) is reduced by adding (from a source 4) a drag reducing liquid to the water (at 2) proximate the surface 5 of a water vehicle 1 to reduce the frictional drag thereon, and ejecting (at 8) a liquid, e.g. water, in the general direction of the flow stream to deflect the flow stream 3 of said drag reducing liquid so that it passes through critical points 6 of disturbance to thereby substantially eliminate the formation of a turbulent boundary layer proximate the surface 10 of the vehicle to substantially reduce frictional drag with a minimum use of the drag reducing liquid.
