Abstract

1298162 Planing vessels; hulls W BODEN 21 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 60622/70 Headings B7A and B7S A high-speed hydroplaning vessel has a hull comprising sponsons 4a-9a arranged stepwise symmetrically about the keel-line so that the inner two sponsons 4a, 7a define, with the substantially flat bottom of the boat, a channel which may, when the boat is at rest in still water, form a wedge-shaped body of air 4 which is narrower nearer the stern. Ducts 3, 3a, 3c carry air to this air wedge when in motion to reduce drag. A perforated plate 36 or mesh may be provided beneath the vessel's bottom to maintain air against it. Hydrofoils such as 16 may be fitted to the sponsons and stabilizers placed outside the hull.
