542,208. Pipe joints. THIRY, L. Feb. 23, 1940, Nos. 3460 and 346]. Convention dates, Feb. 28, 1939 and July 27, 1939. [Class 99 (i)] In a yielding joint, Fig. 1, there is inserted between the flanges of pipes 1, 11 to be joined a unit comprising tubular members 5, 15 with flanges 7, 17 respectively and packing rings 22, 21 mounted on the two sides of the flange 7. A member 20 which is bolted to the flange 17 completes the joint. Four spaced packing rings may be mounted on each side of the flange 7. Modified forms of joint are described in which the flanges on the tubular members are of the same dimensions, packing rings being located between and outside the flanges or between the flanges and distance pieces or coupling members. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 is a single tubular member 27 with a flanged end the other end supporting a ring 26 which is secured by a nut 25. Centrally disposed is a sliding distance piece 23 and the four packing-rings are arranged as shown. A construction similar to Fig. 1 is described in which the flanges are inclined to the axis of the joint. In the construction shown in Fig. 8 the tubular member 51 has a truncated conical flange 52, 52a between which and an outer cover 42, 42a the packing rings 55, 56 are housed. Two such joints as shown in Fig. 8 may be disposed in series. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a joint having a single packing ring between inclined flanges. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
