[Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] The fibrous web produced on a carding engine is submitted to a moist vapour or steam treatment which renders the surrounding air capable of forming a continuous conductive path between the web and a convenient earthing means so that static electricity is discharged from or about the web and its spinning properties increased; the web may be passed between a pair of rollers or cylinders which crush impurities in the web. As shown the web 2, after passage through the rollers or cylinders 22, 23 which crush the impurities in the web, passes between rollers 3, 4 geared together and supplied through pipes 5 and hollow stub axles 7 with moist steam; the rollers are lightly pressed together by springs or the pressure may be sufficient to cause the crushing of the impurities in the web. The web is delivered over a roller 16 driven from the roller 4 and carried in a pivoted bracket so that it may be adjusted relative to the roller 4. The lower heated roller 4 is disposed in a water trough 24 so that steam is released to moisten the web and create a conductive path from the rollers, or steam pipe or both to earth; a shield 25 concentrates the vapour before the rollers and the roller 16 may be cleaned by an adjustable device 26. The web may be dried before passing between the crushing rollers. In another arrangement the web is led around heated rollers to three crushing rollers from which it is carried through a chamber or partly enclosed area by a lattice where moist vapour or steam is released within the websupporting means.
