Abstract

934,194. Forming textile slivers. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Sept. 8, 1961 [Sept. 15, 1960], No. 31822/60. Class 120 (1). Slivers are formed by depositing a fluid-borne stream of fibres in uniform orientation transversely of the direction of the stream flow upon a continuously moving carrier, the direction of travel of which conforms to the orientation of the fibres. Air is the preferred fluid and before entering the air stream the fibres may be cleaned and opened, for which treatments they may be passed through a toothed beater or a carding machine stripper. A duct A through which the air stream flows is preferably of rectangular cross-section of constant major dimension and continuously decreasing minor dimension. Across the delivery end of the duct A there is arranged a moving conveyer which may be a foraminated metal band B or a cylinder or drum. Air seals D, E, F are provided and a suction duct C is located opposite the duct A. The direction of travel of the conveyer surface B past the collecting zone may be at an angle to the direction of fibre alignment of the sliver in order to induce a rolling action by which twist is imparted to the sliver.
