Abstract
<PICT:0697463/IV (a)/1> Undrawn polymeric fibre waste, i.e. material which has become waste before reaching the drawing or elongating process normally carried out on polymeric filaments after spinning, is treated by continuously feeding the undrawn fibres from masses thereof, combing the fibres, e.g. by gilling, into substantially mutually parallel disposition, drawing the combed fibres by means of drawing rollers so as to elongate the fibres, and collecting the drawn mass as a sliver or the like for subsequent working into yarns. As shown, tangled masses of undrawn nylon or other polymeric waste fibres are placed on an apron 12 and fed between fluted pressure rollers 10, 14 to a gill mechanism 17, and thence through drawing rollers 21, 22, the lower of which is provided with an endless apron 26, a funnel 28 and calender rollers 29, 30 to a container 34. To provide continuity of movement, a pre-formed sliver of the same material is fed along with the waste fibre. The gill fallers move forward at a greater speed than the surface speed of rollers 10, 14, so as to comb and parallelize the fibres. The surface speed of rollers 21, 22 is greater than that of rollers 10, 14, e.g. in the ratio of three or more to one, whereby the fibres are drawn and elongated. The resultant sliver may be passed through the apparatus again, the process being repeated until the fibre is elongated to its maximum length without breaking.
