Abstract

A number of carding machine slivers, each having a weight of at least 10 grammes per metre, are continuously supplied to a drawing and lap forming machine where they are drafted in parallel so that groups of slivers are combined first into strands and then into a lap. Laps may be automatically doffed from the lap forming machine and passed to winding apparatus in which they are gathered as a single fleece. In a preferred embodiment slivers from between thirty and forty carding machines are drafted in groups, the products of which pass to lap winding apparatus in which they are drafted further. From automatic doffing apparatus of the lap winding apparatus spools of lap are automatically transported to a temporary storage location until transfer to cocomber. The comber has means for combining a plurality of laps and for drawing them before combing.
