1332792 Spinning yarns; drawing frames JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 March 1970] 11980/70 Headings D1F and D1N In a process for spinning yarn from natural e.g. wool, or synthetic fibres, a number of slivers pass through an intersecting gill drawing machine and are then individually flyerwound with slight twist onto bobbins (as distinct from conventionally coiling into cans). The rovings from these bobbins, without further processing, are passed directly to a high draft (at least 20) spinning machine which may incorporate a drafting head of the type desirable in Specification No. 993844. At least two preliminary stages of doubling and drafting, following the carding operation, are preferably retained. The main advantage of the process is stated to reside in the intersecting gills exercising a higher degree of control over the sliver passing through them than do the aprons, rollers or like slip drafting arrangements of a conventional roving frame, so that high quality sliver for use on the spinning machine is assured. In the intersecting gill machine, the flyer-winding assemblies may extend along the frame for a length greater than the width of the gill bed, and diverging, curved tubular, sliver guides lead from the drawing rollers to delivery rollers adjacent these assemblies.
