Abstract

537,825. Fuel injectors. BRADBURY, C. H., and RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1939, No. 33017. [Class 7 (iii)] In a fuel injector of the type in which the delivery valve is provided with a piston portion acted on by the fuel pressure to open the valve, the longitudinal passages through the injector body for conveying the fuel to the piston portion are constituted by one or more grooves formed in the exterior of the body and closed longitudinally by a sleeve shrunk or pressed on to the exterior of the body. Fig. 1 shows an injection valve 7 formed with an enlarged portion 6 to which fuel is led by a groove 15 cut in the outside of the body 5 and closed by an external sleeve 26, oblique passages 27 being bored through the body to connect one end of the groove to an inlet socket 16, and the other end to the chamber 18 in which the piston 6 operates. The nozzle 11 is formed in a sleeve flanged at 12 and secured by a nut 14, clearance being left at 10. The valve is closed by a spring 24, and its lift is limited by a stem 20 formed on a screwed plug 19, a floating disc 21 being interposed between the piston 6 and stem 20. Leak-off passages are provided at 22, 23. Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to an injector having two concentric valves 7 and 30 for the admission of power oil and ignition oil respectively, for example as described in Specification 124,642, [Class 7 (iii)]. The injector body 5 is formed with a groove 15 for leading the power oil to the piston 6 of the valve 7, and with another groove 33 leading the ignition oil to the piston 29 of the valve 30, both grooves being closed by the sleeve 26. The groove 15 communicates with bores 17, 42, 46 and the groove 33 with bores 34, 43, 47,- the bores 42, 43 being closed by screwed plugs 44, 45. The lift of the two valves is limited bv stops 20, 38, and they are closed by springs 24, 40 respectively. In a modification, the grooves 15, 33,.instead of being 180 degrees apart, are arranged at 90 degrees, the groove 15 being connected to the inlet 16 by a single oblique bore, while the inlet 28 for the ignition oil is arranged at right angles to the injector body and connected by a radial bore to the groove 33. In another form, the groove 33 is omitted, and the inlet 28 connected by an oblique bore directly to the chamber in which the piston 29 works, the valve-closing springs being arranged one inside the other.
