Abstract

536,381. Vaporizers. NAM, C. S., FAWKES, W. H., and LLOYD, H. E. DRUMMOND-. Nov. 11, 1939, No. 29887. [Class 7 (iii)] In an engine constructed for use with petrol, the normal carburetter, which is retained for starting purposes, is supplemented by a vaporizer for heavy oil. The vaporizer is exhaustheated and comprises a casing 1 with an exhaust inlet 2, a baffle-plate 31 and separate passages 4, 5, in which the oil and air are heated respectively. The passage 4 is connected to the carburetter, not shown, in the vicinity of the choke tube and the air passage 5 is connected to the air inlet opening of the carburetter, oil from a float chamber 11 is supplied to the casing 8 of an injector 7 which discharges into the passage 4 through a helical passage 13 the dimensions of which increase towards the delivery end. By adjusting the injector axially the quantity of delivered fuel may be varied. Delivered with the fuel is a small quantity of air which is regulated by a member 9 and discharges through a central channel 9<1>. A throttle valve 4<3> is disposed in the passage 4 and means are provided to change over.the fuel supplies to the vaporizer and carburetter. The change-over may be effected by hand, or automatically by a heat-sensitive device such as a thermometer 25. Waste products may drain away through a non-return valve 27 which also acts as a pressure - relief valve. Cleaning the passage 4 may be effected by removing the cap 4<1>. The rate of flow of the exhaust gases through the vaporizer is controlled by a valve 3<1>. A blow lamp may be inserted in the elbow 32, if required.
