Abstract
491,636. Surface carburetters. MACPHERSON, D. J. Dec. 15, 1937, Nos. 34768 and 34769. Convention dates, Dec. 15, 1936 and Dec. 2, 1937. [Class 7 (iii)] A casing having an air inlet and a mixture outlet contains a unit in which is a wick dipping into fuel and completely spanning the passage through a tubular member to ensure that the air passes through the wick. Air, heated in a jacket 41 around the exhaust pipe, is admitted through a pipe 40 to a casing C in which a constant level of fuel is maintained by a floatcontrolled valve 39. The air passes through a removable casing 43 in which wicks W are supported in zigzag form by curved plates 45, 46 at the ends of a plate 47, the wicks being secured to the casing 43 and the plate 47 by bars 50 carried on bolts 49. The wicks may be supported by the fuel supply pipe 52. The mixture passes through a spiral passage 71 containing flexible baffles and is fed through a pipe 15 to the manifold 10 which. contains a throttle valve controlled by a lever 14. As the throttle opens a projection 35 on an extension 34 of the lever 14 engages an arm 28 to open an auxiliary air valve 26. Other auxiliary air is admitted past a suction - actuated valve carried by a hinged plate 19 which opens outwardly if the engine backfires. In a modified construction metallic wool, heated by an exhaust jacket, is disposed in the upper part of the casing 43 and /or in an enlarged part of the pipe 15.
