Abstract
535,527. Internal shoe brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and GATES, G. R. G. April 5, 1940, No. 6205. [Class 103 (i)] The spreading device between the trailing and leading shoes 10 and 11 forms a rigid spacer when the brake is not applied and an adjusting means shown in the form of a screwed plunger 30 carried by the wheel cylinder plunger 23 is pivotally connected with the leading shoe 11. The wheel cylinder 15 is capable of angular movement in the plane of the shoe about a central spigot and also of limited longitudinal movement against a friction device; and the pistons are only capable of limited movement into the wheel cylinder 15 in order-to obtain the rigid spacer for the shoes. The movement of the adjusting plunger 30 is effected by means of notches 35 in the edge of the cap which carries the plunger; a spring locking finger 36 engaging in notches 35 is provided. The adjusting means may be associated with the trailing shoe 10, whose adjustment is in part effected by distortion of the drum arising from the torque of the leading shoe.
