595,343. Brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and GATES, G. R. G. Oct. 30, 1945, No. 33315/46. Divided out of Complete Specification cf 595,322. [Class 103 (i)] An internal shoe drum brake has an adjusting cam 37 which transmits thrust from the piston of an hydraulic cylinder 14 to the shoe 12 to , which it is pivoted at 26. The lower end of the shoe is anchored to the back-plate 10 directly or through a second hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder 14 has an extension 16 projecting through a slot 17 in the back-plate, permitting a limited sliding movement. The closed end of the cylinder engages the other shoe at 19. The piston carries a cap 21 with smooth end surface 22, and a bent sheet metal member 25, Fig. 3, is interposed between the cap and cam, a ridge 42 engaging the recesses 43 of the cam. Any oscillation of the shoe and cam due to eccentricity of the brake drum causes a slight sliding movement of the member 25 on the cap 21 without impairing the cam adjustment. In alternatives, the cam may be formed with tangential flats instead of notches; the adjuster may co-operate with an anchorage fixed to the back-plate; it may be used with brake shoes of a floating type, or with brakes of the self-energizing type.
