Abstract
623,947. Adjusting brakes. PRATT, J. H., and MANLEY, G. E. June 4, 1947, No. 14743. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In an expanding-shoe brake of the kind described in Specification 614,692, in which a feeler device 17, Fig. 1, automatically maintains a predetermined running clearance between the brake shoes and drum, and the development of lost motion between the shoes and the expander mechanism is prevented by a unidirectional gripping device comprising a rod 81 on one brake shoe 6 passing through an eyed or slotted member 9 which slips over the rod 81 when acted on axially by a return spring 12 but grips it when canted by the eccentric loading of the brake expander plunger 71, the eye is provided with oppositely disposed self-aligning gripping members 101 having flattened bearing surfaces engaging flattened bearing surfaces on the rod 81. The gripping members 101 are staggered as shown, and comprise turnable pins having centrallydisposed flats 103, Fig. 4, co-acting with flats on the rod 81. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the pins are replaced by hemi-spherical elements. According to the Provisional Specification, the bearing surfaces may be of flattened elliptical form.
