Abstract
533,685. Pistons. LESTER ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 14, 1939, No. 30031, Convention date, Oct. 2. [Class 122 (i)] The annular plunger 7 of a pressure casting machine has its end, which engages the plasticized or other material M to be cast, concave. This groove 8 may have a parabolic cross section, and the inner and outer walls 10 and 9 are so thin that in use the pressure forces them into close contact with the central rod 2 and cylinder 1 respectively. The plunger is made of strong, hard, heat resisting metal, e.g. alloy steel, and the end portion is so treated as to make it relatively soft and resilient. This treatment may consists in carburizing the whole plunger and air quenching or drawing its temper by immersing its lower end in a lead bath.
