Abstract
542,302. Cylinders ; valves. SANDERS, A. F., and FOWLER & CO. (LEEDS), Ltd., J. March 14, 1941; No. 3472. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXVI] Cylinder bores, whether of cylinder blocks or liners or sleeve valves, particularly of internalcombustion engines, are formed at the part where the most wear occurs with one or more helical grooves 11 filled with wear-resistant metal or alloy. The rings 13 of the piston 14 are made wider than the space between adjacent coils of the groove. In modifications there may be two helical grooves of opposite hand, either spaced from one another or crossing over one another ; the helical grooves may be supplemented by a complete circumferential one. Where the wear is greatest the grooves may be deeper or of finer pitch. The metal or alloy may be welded or electrodeposited in the grooves, as described in Specification 469,831.
