Abstract
580,753. Pistons. HOWLETT, J. W. and WELLWORTHY PISTON RINGS, Ltd. May 30, 1944, No. 10367. [Class 122,(i)] In a piston having a split skirt and formed of an alloy having a greater expansion coefficient than the cylinder, expansion of the skirt is controlled by a split ring or rings 22 of steel or cast iron, the ends of which interengage as at 25 to prevent circumferential separation. The bore of the ring when closed is preferably slightly less in diameter than that of the groove. The ring may be inert or tend to contract and may be flush with or extend above or below the piston surface. A control ring may also be arranged in a scraper ring groove beneath the scraper ring, or, as sliown in Fig. 7, may be channelled to contain the scraper 42h. Holes 45 are provided in such cases for oil transfer. The piston may have longitudinal and circumferential slits 15, 16, 20 and may be of the form described in Specification 578,531 which is referred to.
