Abstract
584,336. Pistons. HOWLETT, J. W., and WELLWORTHY PISTON RINGS, Ltd. Sept. 27, 1944, No. 18444. [Class 122 (i)] In a light alloy piston having an expansion controlling ring 24 of material of lower coefficient of expansion disposed in a groove below the gudgeon-pin bosses, the ring being split and having its ends welded or brazed together, a hole 28 through the piston skirt in line with the slit 15 therein provides access to the inner surface of the ring for the welding &c. operation. The ring may be formed in segments and may be of such width as to provide accommodation in the groove for an oil scraper ring. Alternatively, the ring may be grooved to accommodate such a scraper ring. A second expansion control ring 23 may be disposed above the bosses. The ends of the ring may be overlapped or recessed and subsequently welded. Specification 578,531 is referred to.
