Piston packing.-A split packing ring is made with an excess tension tending to expand the ring, the wearing surface being then treated by hammering or rolling to stretch the metal and thus produce a tension to counteract the excess of tension. As the treated surface wears away, counteracting tension is reduced and the initial excess tension then compensates for the reduction in the radial thickness of the ring. The excess tension may be the inherent tension of the ring alone, or the surface opposite to the wearing surface may also be treated to stretch the metal. In the case) of horizontal engines the treatment may be applied principally to those parts of the rings most subject to wear.
