[Also in Group XXII] In a process for the manufacture of piston rings having a lead bronze layer immersion cast on to an inner steel layer according to the parent Specification which is referred to, the thickness and hardness of the lead bronze layer and the resilience of the steel layer are so adapted to one another by appropriate pressure treatment and choice of the type of steel that, as the lead bronze layer is gradually worn away the radial pressure of the ring acting on the cylinder wall does not decrease, owing to the corresponding reduction in the compressive effect of the lead bronze layer on the steel. It is stated that the compound rings may be up to 50 per cent thicker than cast iron rings.
