A straightening die or block for straightening machines, for wires, rods, tubes and the like, of the type in which dies or blocks are fitted into rotors through which the wire is passed, has the straightening surface in contact with the passing wire entirely or partly of hard metal. The straightening surface may be entirely or partly machined, ground and/or polished. The die or block may comprise a base part 2, Fig. 1, of cast iron or steel, and a wire engaging part 1 of hard metal. The part 1 may be in the form of a liner, Fig. 2. A hard metal insert 1a, Fig. 3, may be provided in a base 2. The die or block may be partly closed, Fig. 4, with a slot 3 for the insertion of the wire and a hard metal bush 1b. The slot may be closed by a wedge or screw means. When two dies or blocks are used as a pair in the straightening, only that getting most wear may be of hard alloy or have a hard alloy insert.
