A starter bar, for use with continuous castings of different cross-sectional dimensions, has a replaceable head 1 with a cross-section corresponding to that of the casting 2, a dovetail groove (3) by which it interlocks with the casting and a straight- or curve-tapering portion R so that there is a gradual transition from the head to the rectangular-sided bar body 4. The thickness e of the starter bar body 4 is not greater than the minimum thickness of casting and the width (L) is not less than the maximum width of casting. The tapering portion R is bolted or keyed at 5a to the bar body 4. Aprons 10 of guide rollers or shoes may be applied by jacks to opposite faces of the body 4 and, subsequently, to the faces of the casting, if the portion R of the bar is inclined at both faces. Alternatively, the apron 10 at one face, corresponding to a non-inclined face of the portion (R), may be fixed, as shown, and the apron at the other face applied by a jack 11. A similar arrangement applies to the withdrawal rollers 6, 7, hydraulic jacks 12 causing at least the rolls 6 at one side to grip the bar or casting. The bar head (1a may comprise three subheads, Fig. 4 (not shown), to draw three casting simultaneously from a multiple mould or three moulds.
