Abstract
1,067,545. Continuous casting. UNITED STEEL CO. Ltd. Sept. 6, 1965 [Sept. 8, 1964], No. 36756/64. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting machine in which two strands are produced, each strand is engaged by at least one pair of withdrawal rolls (2), (2<SP>1</SP>) and (4), (4<SP>1</SP>), Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), which are mounted adjacent to one another and driven from one side of the machine. One roll in each pair is movable relative to the other by a piston and cylinder arrangement (9), (11), Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the movable rolls being further mounted in a displaceable beam (8) in the frame (1) of the withdrawal device. To effect the drive between adjacent rolls in each pair an Oldham coupling (17), (17<SP>1</SP>) is located between the corresponding rolls or the shafts thereof. The coupling permits some transverse displacement between corresponding rolls to accommodate variations in size of the strand being cast, whilst still permitting a positive drive to each roll. The withdrawal unit may be adjusted to accommodate strands of different crosssection by movement of the beam (8). In a further embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), means are provided to facilitate the stopping of one pair of rolls to grip one strand while still maintaining a positive drive to the adjacent pair of rolls to withdraw the other strand.
