Abstract

1,247,487. Continuous casting machines. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 21 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 9581/69. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting machine a pinch roll assembly 10 is mounted on wheels 15 and can be moved away from the casting path, for maintenance, on a track 16. When casting, the assembly 10 is firmly held in the casting path by links 22 secured at their tops 23 to the assembly by wedges 25. The pinch rolls 44 (Fig. 4) are in the form of four subassemblies 36, 37, 38, 39 each comprising 3 rolls 44 with backing rolls 47 (Fig. 3). Each roll 44 is splined at 45 (Fig. 4) and connected to a driving means (not shown). The surfaces of the rolls are provided with helical grooves (46). Each subassembly is removably joined to a backing plate 50, 51, 52, 53 by a wedge connection 54, 56. The two subassemblies 36, 37 are mounted on the assembly frame 10 by sprung bolts 65, 66. Subassemblies 38, 39 are mounted on an assembly 57 through the intermediary of sprung connections 70, 71, 72. These connections are individually adjustable as regards their spring tension by rotating the nuts 70, or removing one or more of the nest of springs 71. The assembly 57 is slidable on the frame 10 and driven by two screw-type thrusters 80, to adapt to castings of different width. Guide rolls 91 are also provided in two groups above and below the pinch rolls. The sides of the slabs cast are engaged by idler rollers 101 the spacings of which are adjustable by pistons and cylinders 99. At the beginning of casting a starter bar is introduced into the mould by passing it through the pinch rolls. After the cast slab has passed through the pinch rolls it is bent through 90 degrees to form a horizontal strand.
