Abstract

1,274,557. Continuous casting. CONCAST A.G., and SCHLOEMANN A.G. 11 Dec., 1969 [13 Dec., 1968; 20 Feb., 1969], No. 60625/69. Heading B3F. A straight guide track 6, for receiving a liquidcored cast strand 5 from a curved guideway 1 and withdrawing and straightening unit 2, includes at least one unit 11 (61, 83 or 41) which has rollers 24 and/or (62, 63, 81, 86 or 44) cooling guide-plates 23 and is linearly and/or tiltably movable (out of the position in which it provides backing for the strand shell) to allow a starter bar 4 to be detached and hauled into a tiltable receiver 7 as shown or to be fed back into the guide path at starting. The unit 11 is moved forward on wheels 12 in a box frame 14, 15 up to the unit 2 by a D.C. motor 27 in synchronism with a cylinder 9 which raises the receiver 7. It is raised and lowered by cylinders 16, possibly under the control means of monitoring the pass age of the leading end of the strand. Spacers 17 determine the spacing between the rollers 24 or plates 23 and lower rollers 10 according to strand thickness. Guides (35) for the bearings of the plates 23 and rollers 24 may be as described in Specification 1,271,275 and if the strand 5 raises the unit 11 it bears tightly against the top of the frame 14, 15. The plates 23 cool the strand 5 but may be replaced by sprayers (33). Some of the rollers 10, 24 may be driven. In an embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown, in which the bar receiver (7) has a pivot- and-slot mounting (56), its lower end rests on a transom (57) of the movable guide unit (61) to be raised out of the strand path (detaching the bar in the manner described in Specification 1,195,152) when the unit is raised into strandreceiving position. The unit (61) has both upper and lower guide rollers (62, 63) and a unit (83) similarly equipped, Fig. 7 (not shown) and with tension rods between top and bottom is supported on bogies for movement backwards or forwards by piston and lever, the front bogie running down a slope on the backward move to tilt the unit and permit insertion of the bar (4) at starting. In another embodiment, the unit (41) has upper guide rollers only and is hingemounted to be swung up from the strand-guiding position to facilitate handling of the starter bar (4). A unit may be movable horizontally across the strand path. The bottom section of a guide track 6 may be movable to allow handling of the bar 4 from below. All four sides of the strand may be supported.
