Abstract
967,712. Continuous casting; swaging. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. Aug. 15, 1963 [Aug. 15, 1962], No. 32325/63. Headings B3F and B3H. A machine for continuously casting metal strip or plate comprises a narrow rectangular mould formed with long sides 9, 10 and short sides 11, 12. A slotted nozzle in the casting chamber 6 is formed by inserts 15, 16 and extensions of the short sides 11 and 12. Spring means 13, 14 and 34 biases the side portions together and into contact with the inserts 15, 16 to ensure a liquidtight joint. The long sides 9, 10 of the mould are water-cooled and are divided into eight parallel segments. These long sides are moved simultaneously towards and away from one another by the action of cams on shafts 37, so that the casting gap periodically widens and narrows. Adjacent cams may be staggered so that adjacent mould segments perform opposing movements for a short part of the cycle. The cam-shafts are rotated synchronously and are connected that two opposite mould segments simultaneously move apart or towards one another. This action of the mould effects a kneading action on the solidified strip which is drawn out of the mould during the widening phase by rolls 36. The frequency of oscillation can be adjusted by a variable-speed drive to the cam-shafts 37. A further embodiment incorporates forging jaws 54 driven by cams and located adjacent the mould and includes automatic clamping means 56 for the strip 55 to permit movement of the strip in the casting direction only through the forging device.
