Abstract

533,275. Automatic volume control. HILL, C. J. W., and SMITH, J. W. Oct. 26, 1939, No. 28769. [Class 40 (v)] A circuit for deriving a voltage dependent upon the mean voltage of a modulated carrier wave comprises two rectifiers connected in opposition such that the modulation components cancel one another, the desired voltage being derived from only one of the rectifiers. The modulated carrier wave is applied through condensers Cl, C2 to the rectifiers D1, D2, which are connected in opposition and are provided with load resistances R1, R2 the outputs from which are combined through high resistances R3, R4 and an isolating condenser C3. In the circuit the audio-frequency components are cancelled out and, due to condenser C3, only the D.C. output from diode D2 is passed through a filter C4, C5, R5, R6 to remove radio frequencies and then to the grid of a D.C. amplifier T, from the anode of which the desired A.G.C. voltage is taken. A negative grid bias for the triode T is obtained from the resistance R9 and this serves as a delay voltage for the A.G.C.
