Abstract

413,390. Thermionic valves; circuits for wireless reception. TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE, 12, Hallesches Ufer, Berlin. Jan. 30, 1933, No. 2916. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1932. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] The grid-voltage anode-current characteristic of a thermionic valve is given a negative logarithmic shape (I p=-log c E g), over a working range of twenty or more volts grid bias, by varying the pitch or spacing of the grid as in the case of variable-mu valves. The valve is preferably of the screen-grid type. The Specification shows by mathematical analysis that if the bias of such a valve is varied proportionally to the input amplitude the output amplitude is constant; and that the distortion arising is constant throughout the working range and may be kept small. Fig. 4 shows an automatic volume control circuit employing the valve as a high-frequency amplifier H preceding a detector G. The bias on the grid of the valve H is varied in accordance with the amplitude of signals received on the aerial A by means of a resistance Q which is traversed by the plate current of a rectifier valve D fed from the aerial.
