Abstract

634,374. Radio receiving circuits; radio signalling. ARMSTRONG, E. H. Nov. 11, 1946, No. 33423. Convention date, March 30. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIX] In a broadcasting system a supersonic tone is added to selected parts of the transmission, such as advertising matter, and the corresponding receivers are provided with means whereby these items are suppressed automatically or reproduced at a reduced level. The Figure shows a frequency-modulation receiver in which the first audio-frequency stage comprises a de-emphasis circuit 21, 22 and a pentode amplifier 24. The control tone is separated by a high-pass filter 32 and is applied over an amplifier and sharply-selective circuits 38 to a rectifier 40. A delay voltage is derived either as shown, from the cathode current of the amplifier 35 or by means of an adjustable potentiometer connected across the high-tension supply (Fig. 3, not shown). The rectified output is used to control the gain of the valve 24, being applied to the suppressor grid over a smoothing circuit and adjustable potentiometer 44. The control potential may also be applied to the grid by means of a switch 45, which may be arranged to come into operation when the potentiometer 44 is at maximum. A resistance 26 connected to the high-tension supply is utilized to stabilize the cathode bias of the valve 24. U.S.A. Specification 1,941,067 is referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the arrangement may be used' to give muting during tuning, the control then being derived from the noise present. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
