[Class 44] The slider of a sliding clasp fastener is held against unintentional opening movement by a slidable plate 31 housed in a recess 30 in the upper wing 14 of the slider and guided by lateral flanges 32. In the position shown in Fig. 2 these flanges are clear of the converging channels 18, 19 and allow free passage of the fastener members. In the other extreme position, Fig. 4, the flanges project into and restrict channels 18, 19 to prevent movement of the slider. Member 31 is moved automatically by frictional engagement with the fastener members so that on closure movement of the slider it automatically assumes the free position, Fig. 2, but any movement of the slider in the opposite or fastener releasing direction moves member 31 to the locking position, Fig. 4, to prevent further such movement, unless the slider is operated by the pull tab 28, in which case a tongue 34 on plate 31 and projecting through a slot in wing 14 is engaged by the end 29 of the pull tab, as in Fig. 1, so that the plate is positively moved to and held in the free position, as in Fig. 2. The above construction avoids damage to the fastener members by the locking device.
