Description

A. E JOHNSON SLIDE FASTENER TAB LOCKING DEVICE Filed March 22, 1943 .fllice Z. 170M016 IN VEN TOR.
Patented Aug. 21, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SLIDE FASTENER TAB LOCKING DEVICE Alice E. Johnson, Garberville, Calif. Application March 22, 1943, Serial No. 480,069
1 Claim.
This invention relates to separable fasteners,
and more particularly to slide fasteners of the that in fasteners of this type, the tabs frequently are accidentally moved to cause the prong to disengage the interlocking fasteners, with the result that the slide member will accidentally move to open the fastener.
It is therefore the primary object of the invention to provide means for securely holding or fastening the tab in its locking position against accidental displacement.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds,
the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out inthe claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed:
Referring to the drawing ure 1 is a plan view illustrating the tab of the fastener moved to a position to lock the fastener and tab against accidental displacement or movement.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2, Fi ure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view illustrating the tab as swung rearwardlyto its inactive position, allowme the slide to move to disengage the interlockns fasteners.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the interlocking fasteners, which are secured to opposite edges of an opening, are indicated bythe reference character 5, and are moved to their interlocked or open positions, by means of the slide indicated by the reference character 6.
The slide comprises upper and lower spaced members which move on opposite sides of the interlocking fasteners 5, the upper member or top of the slide being indicated by the reference character I.
Forming a part of the top 1, are spaced loops 8 which are disposed in the elongated openings 9 of the tab or handle ill, the openings 9 being so arranged with respect to the loops 8, that a slight movement of the tab longitudinally of the slide proper, is permitted.
The tab, which is pivotally mounted, is formed with a spur II which, when the tab is moved to its locked position, moves between adjacent interlocking fasteners, to secure the slide against movement longitudinally of the fasteners to open the fasteners.
The reference character I2 designates the head of a snap fastener, which rises from the upper surface of the top 7, the head being located near the front edge of the top I.
The tab it which is adapted to move to the position as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, is formed with a socket Ill the socket l3 being so disposed that the socket is a shorter distance from the loop members 8, than the distance between the loop members 8 and head 12, so that a binding action is set up between the head 12 and socket I3 to secure the tab against accidental movement,
when the head I2 is positioned within the socket.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided means whereby the tab of a slide fastener may be secured in its locking position iagainst accidental movement to its unlocked posiion.
What is claimed is:
In a slide fastener having interlocking fastening members and a slide member movable over the interlocking members and adapted to move the interlocking members to their interlocked or disengaged positions, the combination with said slide memberof spaced loops rising from the slide adjacent to one end thereof, a, tab having elongated openings in which said loops are disposed, pivotally mounting the tab on the slide member whereby said tab may move longitudinal- 1y of the slide member, a locking member carried y the tab and adapted to engage the interlocking fastening members, securing the slide member against movement, a head rising from the upper surface of the slide member, said tab having a socket formed in the tab a distance shorter from the loop members than the distance between the loop members and head, said head being adapted to extend into the socket, thereby setting up a binding action between the head and socket, for holding the tab in its locked position.
