Description

E. R. NEBELING.
SEPARABLE FASTENER.
AFPLICAIION HLED SEPT. 26, 1919.
INVENTOR 15/? M62952 0V6 WITNESSES A TTORNE Y8 EDMUND R. NEBELING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEPARABLE FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
Application filed September 26, 1919. Serial No. 326,443.
To all who??? it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND R. N EBELING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Separable Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in separable fasteners,
and it" pertains more particularly to separable fasteners of the head-and-socket type. The primary object of the present invention is to provide means by which the head or heads may be positively locked in engagement with the socket.
A further object of the invention is to provide means by which the sliding move ment of the locking member is limited.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in whioh Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing my improved fastener and its application to the strap of a wrist watch or similar article of jewelry;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on theline 44: of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view with certain of the parts removed to show the assembly of the device;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the filling plate;
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of the device with the several parts in the locked position;
. Fig. 8 is a sectional View taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates the socket member of my new and improved fastening, and 11 represents the head 1nemher. As shown in the present instance, the
socket member is provided with two openings, each of which is adapted to receive a separate head, in the present instance there being two heads 12. I do not wish to be limited to two heads, since any number of heads may be employed so long as the socket is provided with the proper number of open ings to accommodate said heads.
The reference character 13 designates the housing, and said housing is provided in its bottom wall with two openings 141, and in one of its side walls with a rectangular opening 15. Mounted in the bottom of the housing 13, is a filling plate 16, and said filling plate 16 is provided with two spaced openings 17 adapted to aline with the openings 14 in the housing 13. interposed between the openings 17, are two openings 18, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The reference character 19 designates a guide plate, and said guide plate is provided with a rectangular cut-out portion 20, the forward end of which is provided with two oppositely disposed lugs 21. This guide plate 19 is provided with semi-circular out out portions 22, the contour of which is adapted to conform to the contour of the openings 17 and 14, and said guide plate 19 is further provided with a looped portion 23, which lies eXteriorly of the housing 13, the arms of said loop passing through openings 24 in the rear wall of said housing. This plate 19 is adapted to be positioned within the housing 13 after the filling plate 16 has been placed therein.
The reference character 25 designates the latch which is slidably mounted within the housing and is provided with a rectangular portion of slightly smaller dimension than the rectangular cut-out portion 20 of the guide plate 19. This latch member 25 is provided on its opposite sides with semicircular cut-out portions 27, which when positioned opposite to the cut-out portions 22, form therewith circular openings in alinement with the openings 17 and 14 heretofore mentioned. Centrally of the latch member 25 is provided an integral lug 30, and said integral lug 30 is adapted to alternately engage the openings 18 to retain the latch either in the open or the closed position, it being shown in closed position in Fig. After the parts have been thus far assembled, a finishing plate 32 is placed over the guide plate 19 and the latch member 25, and'the edges of the side walls of the housing 13 are turned over as indicated by the reference character 35 to maintain the several parts in their operative position.
lVhen it is desired to lock the head members within the openings 17, the latch 25 is moved until its cut-out portions 27 complete the circular openings with the cut-out portions 22 of the guide plate 19. With the parts in this position, the head members 12 are inserted into the circular openings, after which the latch is moved to the closed posiand-sockettype, a casing,
tion shown in Fig. 5. In this position, the latch member engages in'notches 36 of the head members 12, to prevent further displacement of the circular openings.
To maintain the sliding latch member 25 in this position, the lug 30 is engaged with ,the proper opening 18, thus preventing sliding movement of the latch member 25. As best shown in Figs. 3 and 8, the latch mem ber is provided with an operating right-angular portion 40, by means of which it may be manipulated.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the present invention provides a separable fastener of the head-andsocket type, in which the head is at all times secured against accidental displacement relative to the socket, and, at the same time, the device is simple and' cheap to manufacture. Furthermore, the sliding latch is limited in its movement relative to the head member and the housing in a new and novel manner.
I claim:
1. In a separable fastener of the headand-socket type, a separate out out guide socket, a sliding memcut out guide plate and head to secure the plate carried by the ber mounted in said adapted to engage the parts together, and integral shoulders formed on the sliding member, said shoulders engaging the guide plate for limiting the movement of the sliding member relative to the socket. r. i
2. In a separable fastener of the head and socket type, a casing, a latch member slidingly mounted in said casing, a separate guide plate Within the casing ing latch, and strapattaching means integral with said guide plate, said strap attaching means lying on the exterior of said casing.
3. In a separable fastener of the heada separate guide plate carried by the casing and provic ed with a cut-out portion, a latching element slidably mounted in the cut-out portion of the guide plate, and strap-attaching means integral with said cut-out plate and lying upon the exteriorof the casing.
a. In a fastener of the head-and-socket type, a head member, the form of a casing, a separate guideplate mounted in the casing, a filling plate mounted in the casing, and a latching member adapted to engage the head of the head member, said latching member being slid- .ably mounted in the guide plate, substan tially as described. 7
