A sliding clasp fastener comprises two stringer tapes 3, 4 each having a row of individual fastening elements 5, 6 secured to it, the elements of one row being engaged with and disengaged from the elements of the other row by a sliding clasp 14, each fastening element 5 being provided with a locking member 9 which is movable into engagement with a recess 13 in the corresponding element 6 to lock the elements together, the sliding clasp 14 having a magnetized portion 21 the attraction of which for the locking members moves each locking member to its locking position on movement of the sliding clasp in one direction and to its non- locking position on movement of the sliding clasp in the opposite direction. When the elements 5, 6 are engaged their end faces are aligned and the slider is provided with flanges 18, 19, 22 which engage these faces. The flange 18 is provided with an extension 20 which engages guiding recesses in the elements 5, 6. The locking member is L-shaped with one arm 10 pivoted in its element body and with its other arm 11 contained in a recess 12 in the element 5 in the non-locking position; it is moved through a right angle to its locking position. The upper surface of each element 5 is provided with an ornamental brilliant as indicated at 24. To enable ths sliding clasp to move over the elements 5 a portion 23 of its upper surface is hinged; this portion also serves as a handle for moving the sliding clasp.
